Qualsafe Level 3 Award in First Aid at Work (Annual Refresher) (RQF)

A half-day Ofqual regulated qualification to keep your workplace first aid skills sharp. HSE recommended.

Course Overview

Maintaining your first aid skills is just as important as acquiring them. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) recommends that all workplace first aiders complete an annual refresher to keep their skills sharp and stay up to date with any changes in first aid guidelines. The Qualsafe Level 3 Award in First Aid at Work (Annual Refresher) (RQF) is a half-day regulated qualification designed specifically for practising first aiders. It covers the core skills most likely to be needed in an emergency, ensuring you remain confident and competent throughout your three-year certificate period.

Who Is This Course For?

  • Qualified First Aid at Work (FAW) or Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) certificate holders
  • Workplace first aiders wishing to maintain their skills between full renewals
  • Those following the HSE's recommended sequence of training

What You Will Learn

  • Scene survey — assessing the situation safely
  • Primary survey — assessing the casualty
  • Summoning appropriate assistance
  • Identifying when to administer CPR
  • CPR using a manikin — including correct AED pad placement and following AED instructions

Certification

On successful completion you will receive an Ofqual-regulated Level 3 Award certificate valid for 1 year. This certificate forms part of the HSE's recommended training sequence. Before your 3-year FAW or EFAW certificate expires, you will need to complete a full renewal course to remain qualified.

Progression

This refresher sits within the HSE's recommended training sequence: complete the annual refresher in Years 1 and 2 of your certificate period, then renew your full FAW or EFAW qualification in Year 3. Keeping to this cycle ensures continuous competency and uninterrupted compliance with the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981.

Yes. This course is specifically designed for qualified First Aid at Work (FAW) or Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) certificate holders. You must hold a current or recently expired certificate to enrol.
No. The annual refresher does not extend or replace your existing FAW or EFAW certificate. It is a standalone qualification valid for 1 year that demonstrates you have maintained your skills. You will still need to complete a full renewal course before your 3-year certificate expires.
While there is no specific legal requirement to complete an annual refresher, the HSE strongly recommends it as part of their suggested training sequence for workplace first aiders. Many employers include it as part of their first aid training policy to ensure ongoing compliance with the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981.
