Overview

ABOUT THIS COURSE

Children's emergencies can happen without warning โ€” and knowing how to act in those first critical minutes is invaluable. The Qualsafe Level 3 Award in Emergency Paediatric First Aid (RQF) is a focused, one-day qualification that equips delegates with the essential practical skills to respond safely and effectively to emergency first aid situations involving infants and children.

Designed in line with the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) requirements, this course is delivered by National Training Hub โ€” a Qualsafe registered centre โ€” with experienced instructors who make learning accessible, practical, and genuinely confidence-building.

Suitability

WHO IS THIS COURSE FOR?

This course is ideal for anyone who has a professional or personal responsibility for the care of infants and children. It is particularly suited to:

  • Early years practitioners who have gained a Level 2 or Level 3 childcare qualification and need to count in EYFS staff-to-child ratios
  • Childminders and nursery workers looking to meet EYFS compliance requirements with a recognised qualification
  • Teaching assistants, after-school and holiday club staff, and early years support workers nationwide across England and Wales
  • Parents, grandparents, guardians, and anyone who regularly cares for infants or children and wants to be prepared for an emergency

Entry requirements: No formal prior first aid requirements. Delegates must be at least 14 years old and able to perform practical tasks at floor level.

Progression: Learners who complete this course and wish to progress to the full Paediatric First Aid qualification can use their EPFA assessments towards the PFA (RQF) โ€” contact us for details.

Learning Outcomes

WHAT YOU'LL LEARN

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Describe the roles and responsibilities of an emergency paediatric first aider and explain the difference between first aid treatment for infants (under 1) and children (1โ€“18 years).
  • Safely assess an emergency situation involving an infant or child, conduct a primary survey, and summon appropriate emergency assistance.
  • Identify when CPR is needed and demonstrate infant and child CPR correctly on manikins, including initial rescue breaths, chest compressions at the correct rate and depth, and the safe use of an AED.
  • Place an unresponsive, breathing infant or child into the recovery position and monitor their airway and breathing continuously.
  • Administer first aid to a seizing infant or child, including keeping them safe and monitoring for post-seizure cardiac arrest.
  • Identify mild and severe choking in an infant or child and administer correct first aid using back blows and abdominal or chest thrusts as appropriate.
  • Assess the severity of external bleeding, control life-threatening blood loss, and recognise and respond to hypovolaemic shock.
  • Provide first aid for minor injuries including cuts, grazes, bruises, nosebleeds, bites, stings, and splinters in infants and children.
Course Structure

COURSE OVERVIEW

This is a one-day classroom-based course providing six hours of guided learning. The course combines clear theory sessions with substantial hands-on practical time โ€” you will practise infant and child CPR on dedicated manikins, work through choking scenarios using training equipment, and manage a range of emergency situations in a safe, supported environment.

Assessment is ongoing throughout the day: delegates complete five observed practical assessments (infant CPR and AED, child CPR and AED, choking casualty, wounds/bleeding/shock, and unconscious casualty) and one 15-question multiple-choice paper with a minimum pass mark of 11 out of 15.

Classes are capped at a maximum of 12 delegates per trainer. Our instructors keep the atmosphere relaxed and encouraging so even delegates who are new to first aid can build real confidence.
